The Monastery's History
The Benedictine Monastery of Santa María de Montserrat is situated at 720 meters above sea level on the spectacular mountain that bears its name. This setting is really breath-taking as it gives the impression that the majestic mountains are seeking to embrace and protect the Monastery! Legend has it that the sanctuary was built to house the small statue of the Virgin that was found in the year 880 by children who were tending their flocks. Initially, there was an attempt by the parish priest to move the statue but, inexplicably, it became extremely heavy and difficult to transport. Consequently, the priest interpreted this as a sign of the Virgin's desire to remain among the mountains of Montserrat. The statue is now located inside the church and is a touching wooden sculpture which dates back to the twelfth century and represents a black Virgin holding the infant Jesus in her arms.
